Sprint and Lucent Make First 3G Call in the U.S.
Sprint PCS and Lucent
Technologies said that they have made a telephone call at a speed of
2.4 mbps, which is about 165 times faster than any other U.S.
wireless network delivers. The call was made using CDMA2000
1xEV-DO (1x Evolution-Data Only). This 3G CDMA technology will
enable Sprint to offer business customers the ability to open
complex e-mail attachments, using wireless modems in their laptops,
without the need for a wired connection.
Overview of the Testing
- Testing of the 1xEV-DO technology will continue through June
- Sprint will test increased data throughput and capacity
available with the technology, as well as a number of
applications such as Web browsing, file transfer and streaming
video
- Lucent’s commercial Flexent ™CDMA base stations and
QUALCOMM’s 1xEV-DO test equipment will be used in the trial
- Lucent’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base stations is expected to be
commercially available in 2002
- Sprint PCS expects to have the technology deployed by 2003
"Our successful data call using 1xEV-DO demonstrates that
Sprint PCS is on time and on target in delivering on the first steps
to bring high-speed mobile Internet access to our customers,
allowing them to experience new and richer applications, said Oliver
Valente, chief technology officer for Sprint PCS.
Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Seasoned
consultants are not questioning the credibility of 3G networks. We are
questioning the promised time table. We do not see how Sprint can have
a 3G network operational by 2003. Will the PR company representing
Sprint question our cynicism or guarantee 3G network for nationwide
enterprise customers?
