Nokia Tests M-Commerce Solution
Nokia along with Dutch
mobile carrier KPN Mobile and payment processor Interplay Nederland
has announced the successful completion of a secure financial
transaction on a mobile network, using WIM (wireless identity
module) part of the WAP 1.2 specification. Based on this test run,
the companies will launch a pilot project involving a limited user
base.
WIM technology enables the completion of secure transactions via
a digital signature, which for the individual means using a single
PIN-code. WIM is ideal for such wireless transactions as stock
trading, banking, and ticketing. In this solution, WIM was
implemented on the operator’s SIM card, thus enabling secure
transactions using SET (secure electronic transaction) protocol, a
standard for electronic payment designed by Eurocard/MasterCard and
VISA.
Commenting on the initial test, Luc Maas, CCO of KPN Mobile, said
the testing is founded on a "strategy that mobile commerce
should be available to everyone, based on open standards,
independent of their network, operator or financial service
provider." Thus making wireless transactions such as stock
trading and banking part of everyday life.
For m-commerce to attract mass appeal, it must offer people
convenient and simple payment solutions, which do not comprise
safety, said Janne Jormalainen, vice president of product marketing,
Digital Convergence Unit at Nokia.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Digital
signature technology will help in moving m-commerce forward. However,
you need more holistic approach to wireless security. We expect
systems integrators to incorporate this component technology in their
end-to-end m-commerce transaction solutions.
