Swift Transportation Deploys QUALCOMM’s TrailerTRACS
Truckload motor carrier Swift Transportation Co. Inc.. has
selected QUALCOMM’s untethered TrailerTRACS® asset management
system, with units being deployed throughout its nationwide fleet of
trailers, currently standing at 30,000. Swift expects deployment to
begin in the second quarter of 2001.
"Our fleet is already equipped with QUALCOMM’s OmniTRACS™
mobile communications system, and adding TrailerTRACS will further
increase our trailer productivity," said Villiam Riley, III,
senior executive vice president, chief financial officer and
secretary of Swift. "With improved trailer monitoring and
utilization, we can operate more efficiently and provide superior
customer service.
The cellular-untethered product provides real-time
tractor/trailer identification, trailer location, optional cargo,
and door-status data. The unit interfaces with QUALCOMM’s mobile
communications systems to report tractor ID and hourly location
updates. When the tractor is disconnected, nationwide communication
is provided using Aeris® MicroBurst™ technology.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: A good fleet
management application from Qualcomm who was a leader in this before
they got into network and handset business. Now they have updated it
with Microburst technology. Good move!.
Do we care that Qualcomm sells popular Eudora e-mail software and
OmniTRACS, besides being an acknowledged leader of CDMA network
technology?
