Vodafone Selects AirFlash’s Location-Based Wireless Services

After signing an agreement for its location-based wireless platform with Germany’s E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH & Co. KG, AirFlash has also been selected by U.K. carrier Vodafone to develop, integrate and deploy its SmartZone location-based applications for its mobile Internet.

An agreement was signed with Vodafone Global Platform and Internet Services, both divisions of Vodafone Group plc, to offer Vodafone subscribers such added value services as business listings, driving and walking directions, restaurant finder.

SmartZone will provide subscribers will relevant content based on their geographic location. AirFlash’s technology provides searches by time, not distance, and adjusts to the geographic local, such as available streets, construction zones, and the natural terrain, for example, rivers and mountains. By accounting for all the geographic and traffic information, SmartZone ensures that users receive the most relevant and accurate information, the company says.

After paying ₤5.9-billion for 3G licenses, the British carrier is hoping that the offering of location-relevant services will encourage customer loyalty and generate additional revenue.

"AirFlash makes the perfect partner to provide these services as its SmartZone platform, with inherent flexibility and carrier-grade performance, enables us to customize and deploy location-based services (LBSs) that are relevant to our customers in all parts of the world," said Tomas Isaksson, president and chief executive officer of Vodafone Global Platform.

AirFlash’s SmartZone products range from the LBS-fortified SmartZone development platform, for building custom applications, to an immediately deployable solution that includes the SmartZone platform and pre-packaged applications.
