Ericsson Introduces Enterprise Gateway
Ericsson has introduced its Enterprise WAP Gateway/Proxy 2.0,
in an effort to offer mobile solutions to the corporate sector.
The company said that the new WAP
gateway is easy to install, enabling enterprises to offer WAP
services in-house, independent of network operators. Citing the
high-level of end-to-end security the product offers, Ericsson hopes
to attract the interest of financial institutions, such as banks,
that want to offer secure services to customers as well as companies
that want to give mobile workers protected access to their intranet.
By using the WAP gateway behind the corporate firewall, a secure
connection is created from the user’s WAP device, such as a
smartphone or handheld, directly to the data stored in the company
intranet.
Systems integrators will also be offering the gateway and
communications solutions including WAP-enabled phones and
applications.
The Enterprise WAP Gateway/Proxy 2.0 runs on a Pentium® III
platform under Windows 2000 and complies with WAP June 2000
standard.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Ericsson WAP gateway
deserves consideration by those who have decided WAP is the way to go.
However, enterprise architects must determine whether WAP is their
long-term wireless network protocol. We advocate open multi-protocol
approach.
