HTC Adopts Texas Instruments’ OMAP Technology for 3G devices

High performance, low power OMAP™ processors from Texas Instruments Incorporated will serve as the engines for High Tech Computer Corporation’s next generation of wireless devices.

By collaborating with TI, the Taiwanese manufacturer of Windows CE-based devices expects to offer consumers a line of smartphones with sleek form factors and wireless functionality, including broadband Internet access, m-commerce, and PDA capabilities along with e-mail access.

"We have been working closely with TI’s OMAP development team through design reviews and architecture discussion," said Peter Chou, vice president, Wireless Mobile Division at HTC. "We plan to further this collaboration well into 3G and other future wireless solutions."

First introduced in 1999, TI’s programmable DSP-based OMAP architecture delivers advanced wireless Internet and multimedia functionality, without compromising battery life, noted the company. OMAP platform supports all 2G, 2.5G and 3G wireless standards.

Texas Instruments made the OMAP processor prototypes available late last year and has currently started shipping samples of its OMAP1510 product. The OMAP1510 will be available in volume quantities during the third quarter of this year.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: TI's OMAP seems to be finding some traction. But it is not a ground swell!
