Motorola and MapInfo Deliver Location-Directions
Motorola, Inc. and MapInfo Corporation have teamed up to
deliver driving directions to the frequent business traveler.
MapInfo’s miGuide, location-based and driving direction
application, will run on Motorola’s latest Java-based devices, i85s
and i50x handsets.
According to Motorola, the handsets, based on the Java 2
Platform, Micro Edition, will be available this month through iDEN™
network operators, including Nextel Communications, Southern LINC,
and Pacific Wireless Technologies in the United States, with TELUS
Mobility in Canada to follow in the coming months.
"Motorola is making an important, everyday task easier by
offering iDEN handset users valuable location-based content from
MapInfo," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of
Motorola and general manager of iDEN Subscriber Group. "With
these applications, users can conveniently view maps and driving
directions on their iDEN mobile handsets."
For the business traveler, the miGuide will enable them to access
information including yellow pages, retail business locations, and
maps and driving directions. Currently, the miGuide application is
being tested and will be available later this year.
miGuide is built on MapInfo’s miAware™ platform, which
enables wireless service providers to differentiate their offerings.
For example, the platform can be used to develop distinctive
location offerings or to customize MapInfo’s mobile location
applications to meet subscribers’ needs. The platform is comprised
of MapInfo’s Internet technologies, including MapInfo® MapXtend®;
MapInfo® MapXtreme® Java; MapInfo® MapMaker® J Server; and
MapInfo® Routing J Server.
