Intel and Microsoft to Accelerate Next Generation Devices

While network infrastructures are being upgraded to 2.5 and 3G technology to deliver to high-speed, two-way data with new Internet-based multimedia services, Intel Corporation and Microsoft work together to address the other end of the equation: need for powerful end-user devices.

The two companies will work together to optimize Microsoft® Windows Media™ Audio Video and digital rights management (DRM) technology for the Intel XScale™ microarchitecture utilizing the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP).

Released last month, Microsoft Windows Audio and Video 8 provides cutting edge digital media compression and rights management capabilities, said Peter Green, general manager for the Handheld Computing Division of Intel. When optimized for Intel XScale microarchitecture, it will provide a key solution to manufacturers for the development of new products with audio and video capabilities, he added.

Significant to the optimization of Windows Media for Intel processors is the utilization of Intel IPP, which is a set of software primitives for the development of multimedia applications.

According to Intel, IPP consists of prewritten functions for math, image, speech, audio, and video processing that accesses the advanced capabilities of each Intel processor via highly optimized assembly language routines. The result is the delivery of "great" application performance while at the same time reducing battery consumption.

Microsoft and Intel also plan to utilize the Intel IPP to optimize Windows Media for the Intel® StrongARM SA-1110 and the Intel® Pentium® 4 processors.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Putting some of these functions in silicon under a software operating environment is a good thing for future devices based on these chips.
