One2One
Demonstrating Photographic Messaging Solution
One2One, the
network operator, is demonstrating a photographic messaging solution
at Mobilexpo 2001 in Birmingham, England using LightSurf's
technology. The system uses a Motorola mobile handset, clip-on
digital camera, One2One's GPRS network and LightSurf's MediaExchange.
Users can capture an image and send it instantly to anyone in the
world, regardless of the type of device they own. LightSurf's
MediaExchange automatically compresses the images for transmission
over the GPRS network and optimizes them for viewing on the
recipient's device, such as a desktop computer or PDA.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: There is no doubt
that, in the future, we would find multi-media and wireless image
transmission to be an affordable application. However it will
stay as a niche and unaffordable application for a while and - it
will not become a mass market for a while. On the other hand,
there are many other worthwhile applications that will consume the
capacity of GPRS and 3G networks. Nonetheless, technology must move
forward first. Then the economics will dictate what will take off
and what won't.
