Sony Enters Strategic Alliance with Systemonic

Sony Venture Capital Europe, the venture-capital division of Sony Europe, has entered into a strategic partnership with German-based Systemonic, a wireless communications platform provider, in a move to secure a dominant position in the wireless broadband communications market.

The two companies will explore the use of Systemonic's technology in order to incorporate wireless communication capabilities in a variety of Sony products. The German company received further endorsement from Sony with an equity investment.

Evolved out of the research labs at the University of Dresden, Systemonic's platform enables broadband wireless communication at 5 GHz. Systemonic's silicon systems allow implementation of core wireless functionality to be programmed into embedded firmware, as opposed to being hardwired into silicon. As a result, its system-on-chip solution and tools can offer Sony flexibility in standards, as well as the ability to add other important features to meet market demands, the German company said.

In addition, Systemonic’s existing solutions support the European HiperLAN 2 and US IEEE 802.1a among other regional standards, but will also be ideal for the high-throughput, multi-standard emerging wireless markets.

The general manager of Sony Venture Capital in Europe Barry Gravenhorst remarked, "Systemonic is a strong young innovative company with a highly capable management team and expertise in the emerging broadband wireless communications market. Its DSP technology platform will bring significant value to this type of communication at 5 GHz, and will address the future needs of new generation broadband enabled products. "
