Mobiya Marks Aether Systems’ First Step into the Asian market

Aether Systems has announced the formation of a joint venture with SK C&C, a South Korean I T services provider, marking the American company's first step into the Asian market.

The new company, which will be known as Mobiya, is 40 percent owned by Aether and 60 percent owned by SK C&C. As a wireless-ASP, Mobiya will help enterprise customers easily migrate their existing I T system to wireless. A host of wireless data services will be offered using Aether's Fusion™ platform. Fusion comprises of a range of components for synchronization, messaging, and optimized wireless data transmission. The joint company will work closely with SK Telecom, the country's premiere mobile network operator, to deliver its data services using SKT's 2G and 3G CDMA networks.

"Mobiya is the first company in South Korea offering complete wireless solutions including application development, hosting, wireless airtime management, and customer support," remarked Dr. Young Jin Hong, Mobiya's COO. "With technology and financial support from Aether, Mobiya will help launch empowering wireless data services in South Korea," to help companies improve productivity and efficiency, he added.

In a related announcement Aether said that it had successfully tested one of its real-time wireless financial service applications over SK Telecom's cdmaOne™ and CDMA2000 networks. Aether tested its MarketClip™ application, for real-time stock quotes and associated financial information, using a Compaq iPAQ handheld over SKT’s always-on, always-connected networks. The financial application connected to the cdmaOne network via an IS-95B data modem and to the CDMA2000 network via a connected mobile phone, the company said.

"With their superior data transmission rates, CDMA networks are a great match for Aether’s advanced enterprise applications and platforms," said Dale Shelton, chief technology officer, Aether Systems.
