With the release of its
wireless virtual private network (VPN), Sweden’s Columbitech is
promising to add value to corporate networks.
Unlike typical VPNs that connect laptops or desktops to the
enterprise, Columbitech’s wireless VPN provides a channel of
communication between a client device, such as a wireless handheld
or phone, and a company's backend system.
The Stockholm-based company says that its VPN provides added
value by offering seamless roaming, enhanced data speed, and
end-to-end security. The end-user can benefit from an always-on
experience; for example, if there is a temporary lapse in coverage,
the user can resume the session at the last point.
Before the product is launched in September, Columbitech said
that it will ship a beta version to 15 companies on four continents
that are well positioned to deliver its wireless VPN to enterprise
customers. Columbitech is targeting the wireless industry’s
equipment vendors, service providers, and software providers.
Axis Communications, a Swedish-based wireless Internet-based
services company, is one of the first in line to test firsthand how
the Columbitech wireless VPN will provide added service to its
customers.
Planning to implement the beta version as a worldwide demo,
general manager of Axis’ Mobile Internet Division Torbjorn Ward
said, "There is a great demand from global wireless network
operators as well as corporations to solve roaming problems between
Bluetooth and other networks. Columbitech Wireless VPN solution
gives the end-user easy interaction with several networks."
The Swedish company expects beta testing to continue throughout
August and plans to begin shipping the final product in September.
