Cingular Wireless Delivers 2.5G Services to Seattle Customers

U.S. wireless operator Cingular Wireless said it has launched its next-generation wireless service in Seattle. The new 2.5G service is branded as ‘Cingular Internet Express’ offering consumers and businesses alike Internet access of speeds up to 10 times faster than currently available, the company said.

This upgraded service gives Seattle customers the flexibility to move between an Internet session and a phone call or a text message without having to abandon their Internet connection.

In addition, consumers with Cingular's new GPRS service can access Cingular's My Wireless Internet Portal. Using a mobile phone or PC, subscribers can take advantage of the portal’s offerings such as calendar, shopping, and e-mail, address book, and instant messaging as well as the latest information on stocks, sports games, and weather.

The Seattle launch is the beginning of a nationwide 2.5G rollout and sets the stage for cellular migration to more advanced wireless services. The company expects to roll out the service this fall in California, Nevada, and the Carolinas, with expectations of making it available in all of its GSM markets by early 2002.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We welcome Cingular's decision to move forward with GPRS. AT&T is also off the mark. We do hope that major wireless operators will find the money to move forward with GPRS. While we do realize GPRS's spectral inefficiency with respect to CDMA's ixRTT network solution, we feel that this incremental step is cost-effective in the current economic climate and will allow inter-operability with European operators.
