MARKET OUTLOOK
& TRENDS
Q2 Global Shipments of Mobile Phones Fell Sharply, Gartner says
Global shipments of mobile
phones fell sharply in the second quarter, marking the first time in
the history of the product category, according to research group
Gartner Dataquest.
Second quarter shipments from manufacturers to distributors fell
8.4 percent to 89.76 million units in the second quarter from 97.98
million units during the same period a year ago. Sales also fell
from the first quarter, when 98.69 million cell phones were shipped.
Even with these figures, Gartner still expects sales for 2001 to
surpass last year’s mark of 410 million units, perhaps, even
reaching 450 million.
Market Share of the Big Three Manufacturers
- Nokia lost some ground in the second quarter, falling to 34.8
percent from 35.3 percent in the first quarter. Last year it
held a global market share of 27.5 percent in the second
quarter.
- Motorola placed second with a 14.8 percent share, versus 13.2
percent last year.
- Ericsson climbed to 8.3 percent from 6.8 percent.
Many analysts are expecting the merger of Ericsson’s and Sony's
mobile phone divisions to rival Nokia and Motorola in the future.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This
decrease was expected by all. Nokia continues to hold its own - we do
not see slight decrease significant. It will take until 2003 for Nokia
to feel any serious impact from new Ericsson-Sony company.
