Ford Motor Company Turns to Motorola to Provide Telematics System
in Luxury Vehicles
Motorola has entered into
a telematics deal
with Ford Motor Company to provide the new Lincoln vehicle
communications system (VCS), which will be available as an option on
model year 2002 Lincoln cars.
"The Motorola TimeportT integrated hands-free phone and
telematics system provides Lincoln drivers with an enhanced
communications experience," said Ray Sokola, corporate vice
president and general manager of Motorola's Telematics
Communications Group.
Features of the Lincoln Vehicle Communications System
- Location-based satellite GPS route guidance, roadside
assistance, emergency assistance, and automatic crash
notification.
- Hands-free voice recognition system that allows drivers to use
simple voice commands for pre-set name dialing and personalized
information, both available in conjunction with Sprint PCS Voice
Command.
- Motorola Timeport phone can be used both in and outside of the
vehicle.
- When docked, the phone automatically connects with the
vehicle's electronics and audio system, enabling a range of
a VCS services.
- Hands free sending and receiving of calls through the
steering wheel controls or the audio system.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Motorola
does have deep expertise to help Ford in Telematics. We like the fact
that Motorola Timeport can be used outside the vehicle - a shortcoming
in On-star's original implementation.
