NTTDoCoMo, PacketVideo Develop Live Streaming Video Platform for
3G Network
The Japanese telecom NTT
DoCoMo and PacketVideo have laid claim to the development of the
world’s first one-to-many live video distribution platform that
will enable delivery of live-video streaming content over DoCoMo’s
3G service, FOMA. The platform marks the conclusion of a memorandum
of understanding signed in January between the two companies.
The platform — FOMA Live-Video Distribution Platform —
enables video and data transfer in Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP)
to be converted into data compliant with FOMA visual handsets. Users
will be able to view video streaming services in real time without
having to install streaming media software on their devices, the
companies said.
The platform incorporates the MPEG-4 technology for its
data-coding standards, which allows content providers to distribute
content not only to FOMA terminals but also to virtually any PDA.
The telecom plans to use a Personal Handy-Phone System (PHS) network
for the distribution of video content to PDAs.
In addition, the two companies will set up the FOMA Live
Streaming Delivery Trial Consortium on September 20, 2001.
Comprising of 32 corporations and industry organizations, the
Consortium will develop and study service applications for the FOMA
Live-Video Distribution Platform as well as examine the
marketability of the service.
One of the Consortium's first undertakings will be to conduct
actual field trials of new live-video and archive-video streaming
applications. The trials will run from October 1, 2001 through to
February 28, 2002.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: PacketVideo
continues to attract the imagination of investors and multi-media
application developers on the hope and questionable assumption that 3G
networks to support this application will have enough capacity and
affordable price-points. We at MobileInfo are not very hopeful of that
happening in the short-term. Luckily for us in Europe and North
America, NTT DoCoMo will validate the technology and network
suitability. In the medium term, only niche multi-media applications
will be affordable. We do support the experimentation in the interest
of future consumer applications.
