Wireless Video Could Save Lives

Canadian developer of high-speed fixed and mobile wireless solutions Unique Broadcast Systems, Inc. said that it along with International Digital Communications, a systems integrator based in Las Vegas, demonstrated how a high-speed mobile wireless system could enhance emergency healthcare to save lives.

UBS’s newly designed COFDM-based high-speed mobile system delivers critical medical information from an ambulance to a hospital: from the time paramedics arrive on the scene of a medical emergency to the time the patient arrives at a hospital.

The demonstration involved equipping an ambulance and a Las Vegas fire station with the system that allowed for video broadcast from the ambulance to the fire hall. The ambulance was equipped with a portable wireless camera that was used to capture the patient on video prior to boarding the ambulance. The images were then broadcasted to the fire station using COFDM technology, and from there the signal was transmitted to a medical institution via satellite.

The system will broadcast video images of the patient on route as well as transmit vital information such as the patient’s vital signs, including ECG and blood pressure.

Commenting on value of the system, Louis Baldenegro, president of IDC, said, "The ability to transmit patient information from an ambulance to the staff at a hospital while the patient is on route will improve both the effectiveness of the medical treatment during transport, and the readiness of the medical staff in the hospital and emergency room. I am hopeful that, based on the success of the demo, this type of service will be implemented throughout the U.S. "

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is an interesting implementation of broadband wireless networks and emergency medical solution package application using selective transmission of video to hospitals from an ambulance.
