Gateway Introduces Top-of-the-Line Notebook

With the PC market in a downward decline, manufacturers are putting more emphasis on notebooks, which they believe will replace desktops in the corporate environment.

Following the trend is Gateway, Inc. of San Diego, Calif., with the introduction of the new Gateway Solo 9550 portable computer. The Solo 9550 is equipped with a 1.13 GHz Pentium III processor, up to 512 MB of memory, and a 15.7-inch screen; furthermore, customers can choose to incorporate 802.11b capabilities, providing a high speed Internet connection via a wireless LAN.

While showcasing the latest in portable technology, Gateway is also promoting wireless Internet usage, by throwing in 90 days of free wireless Internet service with the purchase of its top-of-the-line notebook.

"More customers are demanding mobile devices that take advantage of the growing availability of wireless connections," said Mike Stinson, vice president of mobile products at Gateway. "Wireless extends the usability of the Solo 9550, so customers can remain productive in the office, in selected major public locations."

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  Is this news noteworthy where notebooks are passe'? We do not think so and do we remind device decision makers to keep notebooks in their device list. Notebooks continue to be serious devices for the professional - only device with which you can take your office on the road. Handheld devices have a role but let us not ignore the fat that you do not want to depend on your handheld PDA to be your main tool if you are a professional road warrior.
