Hutchison Props Up Order for 3G
Videophones from NEC
The Hutchison Wampoa Group
said that it has placed a second order for one million 3G
videophones from NEC Corporation as its wireless operations,
Hutchison Telecom, moves to expand its portfolio of 3G services.
In September, Hutchison Telecom was awarded
a 3G license in Hong Kong, and since then, it has been committed to
the development of a 3G network. It also is actively expanding its
portfolio of service offerings in mobile multimedia, high-speed data
communications, m-commerce, as well as developing cutting-edge 3G
services.
Under the terms of the agreement,
Tokyo-based NEC will begin delivery of the 3G videophones in the
fourth quarter of 2002. This is the company’s largest order
outside of Japan.
Features of NEC’s 3G videophones
- Dual mode (GSM/GPRS and UMTS/CDMA)
- Two-way video calls
- Mobile data applications such as
Java functions and multimedia services
NEC has already been appointed as a supplier of the
3G-infrastructure system for Hutchinson 3G UK and H3G Italy.
"Having worked closely with NEC since our first order, we
are duly impressed with their expertise in 3G technology, as well as
their vast knowledge of user requirements through their experience
in providing our partner DoCoMo 3G devices for their FOMA
services," said Canning Fok, group managing director at
Hutchinson Whampoa. "Video applications are a key 3G feature
and I am sure that our customers will be keen to get one of these
devices when we launch our services."
