E.U. Forces Mobile Advertisers to
Get Consent for Commercial Messages
European Parliament has voted to
require wireless advertisers to obtain customer consent before
sending commercial messages, including Short Messaging Service
(SMS), reported in Marketing Week.
The Wireless Marketing Association has embraced the announcement.
According to Steve Wunker, WMA chairman, "The WMA established a
code of practice in February requiring user permission, and it is
glad to see those provisions about to be reflected into law."
However, Parliament’s directive must be endorsed by the
European Union’s Council of Ministers and then by the Department
of Trade and Industry before it becomes law, which could take up to
two years.
Meanwhile, the Wireless Marketing Association plans to continue
lobbying aggressively to tackle the problem of unsolicited wireless
messaging or wireless spam.
Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: We told you so.
See our editorial of July 2001.
We are glad to se E.U. enforce some rules. We hope that E.U. has
more teeth than WAA - Wireless Advertising Association -
self-policing body in USA.
