3Com Offers Wireless Network
Bridge
Global network equipment
provider 3Com has introduced its Wi-Fi Wireless LAN Workgroup
Bridge, which offers an easy and affordable way to extend wired
connectivity without the hassles of cables and wires. According to
the Santa Clara, Calif., company the product is the first to offer a
Wi-Fi certified bridge that allows Wi-Fi WLAN infrastructures to
accommodate Ethernet-enabled devices.
For organizations looking to set up temporary networks to
accommodate visiting professionals or workgroups, or to preserve
their investment in existing legacy Ethernet devices, the Wireless
Workgroup Bridge will allow them to do so without the hassles of
leasing lines or laying cables, said Rob Karnbach, solutions line
business manager of LAN infrastructure division in 3Com’s Business
Network Company.
By connecting the 3Com Wireless Workgroup Bridge to a hub, like 3Com's OfficeConnect Dual Speed Hub 5, businesses can gain wireless connectivity for up to four Ethernet-enabled devices, including PCs, printers, phones and Internet appliances. Compared with using standard Wi-Fi certified adapters, the Workgroup Bridge offers businesses a far greater return on investment, the company said.
Features of the 3Com Wireless Workgroup Bridge
- An internal Web server makes it easy to configure, monitor and manage locally or remotely using an Internet browser or other
standards-based tools.
- Security features such as 40-bit WEP, 128-bit shared key encryption and Dynamic Security Link, which supports username/password security and 128-bit encryption, protect customer information.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: SOHO
wireless LAN market is becoming quite competitive with Linksys, D-Link
and Proxim offerings becoming very inexpensive. 3COM does offer better
brand name, ease of use installation software. Wi-Fi certification for
3COM wireless bridge should help.
