Verizon Wireless Launches E-911
Phone Service
Verizon Wireless has
launched its wireless phone emergency service along with a GPS phone
from Samsung.
When operating in an area where both the Verizon Wireless network
and the local 911 call center system have been upgraded for E-911
Phase II service, the Verizon Wireless SCH-N300 will be able to
automatically transmit the calling location and wireless number to
the call center.
The company said that by April 2002, 65 percent of the population
served by its network will be capable of transmitting location data
to local Public Service Answering Points, with complete
coast-to-coast coverage in place by the second quarter of 2003.
"The launch of the Verizon Wireless SCH-N300 from Samsung is
an important step in fulfilling the goal of providing location
services to our customers," said John Stratton, vice president
and chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless.
