Kodak Enters Wireless Fray with
New Company
Having become synonymous for
photographic innovation, Eastman Kodak is now entering into the
wireless fray with the launch of a new company focused on developing
products based on its proprietary wireless technology for
transmitting images and data.
Appairent Technologies will develop market-leading technologies
for the wireless transmission of high quality video, still images
and data. Kodak says Appairent is part of its plan to move from the
lab to the commercialization of its technologies in order to expand
its info-imaging sector, a sub-sector created by the convergence of
imaging science and information technology that the company claims
is worth $255-billion.
Kodak and the Monroe Fund, a private venture capital fund, a unit
of Trillium Group, are the initial investors in the spin-off
company. The amount of the investment and the size of Kodak’s
share were not disclosed. The Rochester, N.Y. company will also
contribute a number of patents and patent applications.
"The greatest value in this intellectual property and the
technology it enables lies in making it broadly available,"
said James Stoffel, Kodak’s senior vice president and CTO.
"We look forward to using Appairent’s wireless communication
technology in our own products and to seeing much broader
applications and infrastructure."

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Kodak
needs all the help it can muster. Therefore, we wish them good luck. We
do not get impressed by the 255 billion dollar number - wireless as a
medium makes the transmission more convenient. It does not addto the
market by a significant margin.
