BBC Enters 3G-Content Arena
Britain’s public broadcaster BBC has set up its own 3G mobile
division to develop content for next-generation mobile handsets,
according to the British consultancy firm BWCS.
Exploiting the advances in wireless technology, the division will
develop content such as sports highlights, news headlines, and
entertainment and business information in multimedia formats.
The first arm of the project, dubbed ARK, will focus on sports
content such as video highlights and color text information.
As early as December 1999, BBC forged its first agreement with
Vodafone to jointly develop 3G content. More recently, BBC Technology
signed a five-year contract with U.K.-based 3G license holder
Hutchison 3G U.K. to manage the production of audio-visual content.
BBC Technology will be responsible for processing and converting
content, including news and entertainment, to be transmitted to the
carrier’s 3G subscribers.
With substantial IT engineering experience and editorial expertise,
BBC is in an ideal position to deliver the cutting-edge content that
telecoms like Hutchison require, said Philip Langsdale, chief
executive of BBC Technology.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: It
is interesting to see BBC get into the content business. There won't be
a line up at the other end but it does make good news. Converting BBC's
news into wireless multi-media content is not rocket science, now that
vendors like Pocket Media make it easy for you..
