Vertu Combines Craftmanship,
Design and Technology into Luxury Phones
Once only thought of as a communications device, now a wireless
handset is looked upon as an expression of the user’s personality
and social status.
Exploiting the current trend is the No. 1 handset maker Nokia
through its subsidiary, known as Vertu, Ltd. Based in London, Vertu is
bringing together artists and craftspeople to design exclusive, luxury
mobile phones, adorned with precious stones and metals, for the rich
and famous.
The only luxury phone that Nokia has manufactured to date is the
Nokia 8850, a tiny gold device, for the Asian Pacific market.
Branded under the Vertu name, these phones may be gold-plated or
smothered with diamonds but will be powered by today’s technology.
People are willing to pay premium prices for exclusive watches and
jewelry, but will they invest in ‘couturier’ mobile phones that
are so susceptible to the rapid shifts in technology and that are seen
on the runways of Milan today but in the Museum of Modern Art
tomorrow?

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Vertu
and Nokia are not going to make money with these gold-plated phones
but they will make a fashion statement.
