Sundance Film Festival Goes
Wireless
Instead of lugging around a 300-page
catalogue, attendees at the Sundance Film Festival 2002, held in Park
City, Utah, were handed a light-weight handheld to view film schedules
and previews, and festival updates and news with the click of a
button. For ten days each year, little Park City is metamorphosed into
a big city, packed with studio executives, big stars and their
entourages, and TV crews there to view the latest filmmaking magic.
Working behind the scenes were Symbol Technologies, Hewlett-Packard
and FluxNetworks creating a bit of magic of their own. Symbol set up
five Wi-Fi wireless hot spots at the Park City venue, so that
attendees using HP Jornada PDAs loaded with FluxNetwork’s FluxShow
platform were provided with a rich media experience with full video,
audio, text, animation and graphic images.
Components of the Wireless Solution
- Symbol’s Spectrum24 High Rate Wi-Fi wireless network
- 500 Wireless Networker CompactFlash adapters from Symbol
- 500 HP Jornada 568 PDAs
- FluxNetwork’s FluxShow Platform

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Multi-media
with WiFi 802.11b and 802.11a LANs is quite feasible. And it will stay
ahead of wide area 3G.
