mmO2 and Microsoft to Launch Mobile Data Services for Business

British telecom mmO2 and American software giant Microsoft said they plan to offer a package of wireless high-speed data services to the corporate sector.

mmO2 will use Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft .NET Enterprise Servers, and Microsoft Windows 2002 Server to deliver services to mobile devices across Europe.

Mobile professionals using any one of a host of mobile data devices from a laptop to a smartphone over mmO2’s networks can expect secure access to their corporate intranet, the Internet, Microsoft Exchange data, including e-mail, contacts and calendar information, and virtual private networks.

As mobile data products and services continue to grow, mmO2 expects the percentage of revenue from data to reach 30 percent within three years, up from the current 10 percent, said Peter Erskine, chief executive of mmO2.

This announcement strengthens mmO2’s commitment to offering business users the widest range of mobile products and services, including its most recent addition the O2 XDA, a PocketPC 2002-based smartphone with integrated mobile phone and data applications.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory:  This is a good partnership between mmO2 and Microsoft. Microsoft's Mobile Information Server needs customers to validate its decision to pull away from Wireless Knowledge. However, we feel that mmO2 will soon find that selling a bundled service like this is a systems integration and business function delivery exercise. You need consulting resources as core to this delivery. We are suggesting that it should hire somebody from the big five consulting firms to head this one.
