PocketPC to Support CDMA Thanks to
Sierra Wireless
Microsoft has teamed up with
Sierra Wireless to integrate CDMA 1x technology into the PocketPC
platform.
Under the terms of the Joint Development Agreement, the two
companies will share resources and develop highly integrated
versions of PocketPC and, soon to be released, Smartphone 2002
platforms.
"The addition of integrated wireless connectivity is the
next step in the evolution of the PocketPC platform," said Ben
Waldman, Vice President of the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft.
This partnership will allow OEMs to develop CDMA versions of
hardware and software solutions for the PocketPC platform. A few
device manufacturers have integrated GSM and GPRS connectivity into
selected products but not CDMA.
Users of future PocketPC devices can expect always-on
functionality, better power consumption and latency, and other
wireless friendly features, Sierra Wireless said.
By working with Microsoft, Sierra can address the growing demand
among professional mobile users for enhanced connectivity, coverage
and speed, with a " tightly integrated end-to-end wireless
platform," said Andrew Harries, senior vice president of
Corporate Development with Sierra.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Sierra
Wireless is leading the way with CDMA modems for various devices. It
is fitting for Pocket PC to have a CDMA modem. We like integration of
the wireless modem inside the box.
