RIM and Glenayre End Legal
Rankling to Develop New App for BlackBerry
On the eve of ending their
eight-month legal dispute, Research in Motion, Inc. and Glenayre
Electronics, Inc. have announced they are now working together to
integrate Glenayre’s messaging services with RIM’s BlackBerry
Wireless Handheld.
The solution will enable carriers to offer BlackBerry subscribers
access to voice mail, e-mail, fax, and text messaging.
"Our development effort with Glenayre is designed to expand
our carrier partners’ service offering and deliver another
compelling mobile application for BlackBerry users," said Mike
Lazaridis, president and co-CEO of RIM.
Glenayre’s unified communications solution will enable
BlackBerry users to combat information overload, by controlling how
and when they communicate.
Patent and Trademark Infringement
This is complete about-face from the acrimonious and litigious
relationship between the two companies. In May 2001, RIM launched a
patent and trademark infringement suit against Glenayre. At the
time, RIM said that Glenayre’s products infringed on its
BlackBerry Single Mailbox Integration patent, which is an important
component of the BlackBerry wireless email solution, and also used
its slogan "Always on, Always Connected" to deliberately
confuse the public.
Both companies now acknowledge that RIM’s Single Mailbox
Integration patent is valid, which has lead to the dismissal of all
pending claims.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: The
best wars are those where both parties win. After having argued in the
courts, RIM and Glenayre have shown pragmatism in joining hands.
Glenayre's unified communication expertise and RIM's always on single
e-mail box can become a single unified box - a victory for the customers
and both cmpanies.
