Wireless Handset Sales Will Topple
469 Million in 2002, study says
Wireless handset sales will
topple 469 million in 2002 and will reach 870 million by 2006,
according to a new study by Strategy Analytics.
In its report, ‘Worldwide Cellular Handset Forecast
(2001-2006),’ the Boston-based research firm foresees GSM/W-CDMA
based systems continuing to dominate the worldwide cellular market
over the next five years. "However, CDMAOne/CDMA2000 sales will
gain share, passing 200 million units in 2006," representing 25
percent of the 3G market, according to David Kerr, vice president of
the firm’s Global Wireless Practice.
Overview of Worldwide Wireless Handset Sales
- By 2006, 77 percent of all handsets sold will be replacement,
up from 52 percent in 2001.
- Southeast Asia will account for more than 40 percent of the
total phone sales by 2006.
- Western Europe and North America will see sales fall from 50
percent in 2001 to 36 percent in 2006.
- Handset sales in Western Europe will remain flat in 2002,
before recovering in 2003.
The report provides forecasts for North America, Western Europe,
Southeast Asia, Central and Latin America, and Central and Eastern
Europe.
