Utility Companies Turn to MapFrame
to Automate Field Service Operations
MapFrame Corporation’s
mobile mapping solution has attracted considerable attention among
utility companies who are looking to automate their field service
operations. Duke Power of Charlotte, N.C., Dominion Power of
Richmond, V.A., and Allegheny Power of Hagerstown, M.D., have all
turned to MapFrame to help their field personnel either conduct
inspections or respond to emergency situations. MapFrame customized
its mobile mapping solution to meet the specific needs of each of
these companies.
General Overview of MapFrame’s Mobile Mapping Solution
Each service vehicle is equipped with a Hammerhead pen tablet
from Walkabout Computers running MapFrame’s FieldSmart View
software, which enables field personnel to access facility maps and
GIS data on the road. With a use of simply gestures, field workers
can easily interact with the software’s interface. For example, a
worker draws a circle to zoom out or prints a ‘Z’ to zoom in.
The software is used to link maps from a utility’s GIS database
system to individual work orders as part of the company’s mobile
data/dispatch system.
When a work order is transmitted to the mobile computer, a field
technician can highlight it, and then tap a map button on the
toolbar to view the most current facility information related to the
work order.
To keep databases current, a technician can make changes by
simply placing a note or a symbol on the map or inputting new
information.
By replacing their paper-based system, which is time consuming
and vulnerable to human errors, with MapFrame’s solution, all
three companies are looking to make it faster and easier for their
field personnel to carry out inspections and to accurately report
information in the field.

between Geographical Information Systems, mapping solutions and mobile
field service applications is not new but adoption is moving at a
relatively slow pace.
