Nokia Makes First IP Packet Data
Call with its 3G W-CDMA Solution
Nokia has announced that it has made the first 3G W-CDMA packet
data calls between its commercial network infrastructure and terminals
in its laboratories in Finland.
The Nokia 3G W-CDMA network infrastructure and terminal used the
commercial standard level known as 3GPP (3G Partnership Project),
making it the first commercial system to transmit packet data
end-to-end.
This is an important milestone in the progress of Nokia’s 3G
W-CDMA system, said Dr. J. T. Bergqvist, senior vice president of
Nokia Networks. "Though we had already achieved data call speeds
of up to 384 kbit/s through a W-CDMA system two years ago, this step
is the most important one so far to enable commercial end-to-end
network launches during the second half of this year."
The First Data Packet Call
Data packets containing user information were sent from a Nokia
W-CDMA terminal to a 3G packet switched core network, and then through
to the terminal.
Nokia said that 3G packet switch core is at the heart of the future
of data intensive communications in 3G networks, and now this
functionality has been for the first time integrated into the rest of
the network with proven end-to-end capability.

agree that this is an important technological milestone but it is not the
technology that is slowing the deployment of 3G or W-CDMA.
