Trucking Companies Save Thousands
of Dollars Using Palm Devices
Palm handhelds are becoming
useful tools in the fast-paced, deadline-driven trucking industry,
according to the Santa Clara, California, handheld maker.
In March of 2000, engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. of Columbus,
Indiana, had its 5,000 distributors, dealers and customers worldwide
equip all their truck drivers with Palm handheld computers running
either QuickCheck or QuickCheck II applications. The solution
enables drivers to view maintenance information and save time
researching and reporting problems.
Drivers are able to perform the following tasks:
- Capture vehicle trip summaries
- Store maintenance information
- Log vehicle data
- Read engine fault codes
- Download data onto a PC for analysis
According to Cummins, the ability to log and report information
reduces costs by eliminating the need for onsite technicians,
improves diagnostics, and reduces time to process orders or solve
technical problems.
Cummins’ customers once bought full-scale PCs, expensive
software and diagnostic equipment costing up to $4,000 per truck
whereas the implementation of Palm handhelds with QuickCheck has cost
the company only $300 per truck.
