RealNetworks Becomes Mobile and
Comes to Smart Phones
Real Networks Inc., maker of
the popular software for playing Internet audio and video, says that
it will begin selling a distribution program to be used with smart
phones. The product is called RealSystem Mobile.
RealSystem Mobile will allow wireless
carriers to sell the ability to play music, news, sports and video on
smart phones.
"This will be a significant
business for us", said Ian Freed, General Manager of
Seattle-based RealNetworks' Mobile products and services group. It
also wants to increase sale of its Internet-based programming
subscriptions for music and news, entertainment and sports. Most
carriers are expected to resell RealNetworks' services through their
portals.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: We
think that this will sell only if the pricing formula is not tied or
related to voice-based displacement of carriers capacity. This will
happen only when the cellular voice-based market gets saturated.
