Samsung Overtakes SonyEricsson for
No. 3 Position
South Korean Samsung has
leaped ahead of SonyEricsson to take third position in the mobile
handset market, according to a Dagens Industri
According to the Swedish daily, Samsung’s market share
increased to 7.5 percent in 2001 from 5.0 percent in 2000. Figures
are based on market research data from Dagens Industri and Gartner
Dataquest.
Samsung’s good fortune, however, appears to be at the expense
of the joint venture between Sony and Ericsson, which only started
operations in October 2001. The Swedish handset maker saw its share
plummet from 10 percent in 2000 to 7.3 percent in 2001.
Even though Samsung has made considerable gains in this highly
competitive market, Finnish Nokia still commands first position with
35.6 percent in 2001 up from 30.6 percent the previous year.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Samsung
is perhaps enjoying success while SonyEricsson is going through teething
trouble. The handset market is becoming a tight race. R&D still
rests with big players (Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola) but handset
manufacturing control has moved out of their hands.
