Americans Will Turn to Wireless
LANs to Surf the Web, study says
By 2007, over 21 million
Americans will be surfing the Web at public wireless LANs located in
airports, shopping centers, cafes and hotels, according to British
research firm Analysys.
In its report, ‘Public Wireless LAN Access: U.S. Market
Forecasts 2002-2007,’ Analysys says the move towards wireless LANs
will be driven by the emergence of WLAN-compliant PDAs and laptops.
Monica Paolini, co-author of the report, said," We believe
that there will be significant end-user demand for public wireless
LAN services, initially from business professionals but with wider
take-up among the small and medium-sized business segments and
consumer users over the following two to three years."
Overview of the Report
- Number of hot spots, where users can surf the Web via a
wireless local area network, will grow to 41,000 by 2007 from
3,700 this year.
- The public wireless LAN market will account for a 25 percent
share of the anticipated mobile data revenue by 2007.
- About 8 percent of all mobile users will use the networks.
- Wireless LAN operators are encouraged to pursue roaming
agreements with each other to minimize the cost of deploying
access points in every hot spot.
- Operators should also offer users better location information,
network detection software, appropriate security and reasonable
pricing.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: We
are bullish about wireless LAN-based hot spots because it makes
technological, economical and consumer sense. The network operators will
fall in place grudgingly and reluctantly.
