Sprint to Add Instant Imaging to
3G Services
Sprint has entered into an
agreement with LightSurf Technologies to enable its 3G subscribers
to send photos wirelessly.
Using any wireless device capable of capturing images, for
instance a digital camera with a wireless PC card, customers will be
able to take and send images instantly to family and friends.
The LightSurf Visual Intelligence Platform (VIP) will be deployed
on Sprint’s 3G network, which will enable data services at peak
speeds of 144 kbps this year and up to 2 to 5 mbps within two years,
according to the carrier.
LightSurf’s VIP is a comprehensive secure suite of scalable
core-technology software components, which enable the exchange of
digital photos and multimedia messaging using any Internet-enabled,
graphics-capable system.
As part of the Sprint Third Generation Experience, the company
gave a live demonstration of the application using a Ricoh RDC-i700
camera with a CDMA wireless PC Card from Nortel Wireless.
The nationwide launch of Sprint’s 3G network is scheduled for
mid 2002.
