Symbian Unveils Latest OS
At the recent 3GSM World
Congress, Symbian unveiled its latest version of its open operating
system for mobile phones. Building on the present OS v6.1 with the
ability to send and receive messages with text, audio and full-color
graphics, the Symbian v7.0 also supports 3G mobile phones and
multimode phones: cell phones compatible with different network
standards.
"Symbian v7.0 is a major release and will accelerate the
take up of mobile data by incorporating the technologies that will
shorten the time to market for new mobile devices," said Mark
Edwards, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Symbian.
New Features of Symbian OS v7.0
- Support for multimode phones, enabling handset makers to
release phones worldwide, across all networks.
- Includes EMS and MMS, providing key revenue generating
services for network operators.
- Includes both IPv6 and also IPSEC technologies, extending the
abilities of mobile phones to communicate securely with each
other on a peer-to-peer basis.
- Incorporates MIDP Java, extending mobile phone capabilities to
run Java applications and services, and SyncML, allowing over
the air synchronization of data.
The new platform will be finalized and shipped during the first
quarter of 2002.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Fight
for the supremacy among the three operating systems - PalmOS, Pocket PC
and Symbian - is heating up. This may be considered good for the
industry so long as application developers can use a
platform-independent tool like Java to build wireless applications on
all platforms. However, you will need to use the native OS for building
more-efficient applications.
