Digital Bridges and BBC Bring ‘The
Weakest Link’ to Wireless Users
Platform provider and
publisher Digital Bridges has announced that it is working with BBC
Multimedia to bring the top-rated game show in the U.K., ‘ The
Weakest Link,’ to mobile users across Europe.
The mobile version of ‘The Weakest Link’ will be available
for both WAP and SMS phones. The WAP version offers an enhanced
graphical experience and dynamic banking, while the SMS version
offers a simplified, text only version of the game.
Orange has secured the rights to the SMS version of the game in
the U.K.
The mass-market appeal of ‘The Weakest Link’ makes it ideal
for the wireless entertainment market, said Brian Greasley, CEO of
Digital Bridges.
The announcement follows on the heels of the agreement between
digital publisher Infogrames and mobile developer Jamdat and Hasbro
to bring popular titles such as Scrabble, Boggle, and Yahtzee and
Dungeons and Dragons to North American mobile scribers. The offering
will be based on Java, BREW and i-Appli technology.
Building on Hasbro’s reputation for engaging family
entertainment products, which have sold hundreds of millions of
units worldwide, Jamdat and Infogrames hope to garner the same
success with the wireless version of Hasbro’s most popular games.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Playing
games with your friends who are far away and mobile at the moment is
enticing. Catching some entertainment when you are not glued to a
fixed TV in the family room is also attractive. While the former
requires only a small amount of wireless traffic, the latter will
require a lot. Hence, in our view the first category of games will
take off but the second kind will take a while. Tariffs for 2.5G and
3G services must come down before it will happen. Developers can keep
on developing. The day will come when they see some money in their
bank.
