Smart Antenna Solution Optimizes
Wireless Spectrum
Continued growth in mobile
subscribers, coupled with growing demand for next generation data
services, presents a challenge to wireless operators.
In an effort to address the problem, Sprint and Nortel Networks
said they have completed trials using Nortel Networks’ CDMA smart
antenna technology, which is designed to double the voice capacity
of Sprint’s existing antenna technology.
Based on Adaptive Antenna Beam Selection technology, the smart
antenna is able to increase voice and data traffic using the
existing spectrum. It is also applicable to IS-95, CDMA2000 1x, CDMA
1xEV-DO and CDMA 1xEV-DV air interfaces.
According to the two companies, the multi-cell technology trial
demonstrated a two-fold increase in the IS-95 voice capacity.
Commenting on the advantages of smart antennas, Ayse Ozgur Aytar,
analyst, Mobile Wireless Research, The Strategies Group, said they
"provide a cost-effective way to attract more customers to an
operator’s network without needing to deploy a large number of new
base stations." In addition, they "reduce interference and
improve the network coverage, thus allowing operators to increase
the number of subscribers they can support and drive down
costs."

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: There
is still a lot of opportunity to squeeze more capacity out of existing
wireless spectrum. Smart antenna is one such technology that can
improve performance. We want to give both Sprint and Nortel credit for
doubling the capacity of CDMA.
