i-mode Moves into Europe
Dutch mobile operator KPN
Mobile has announced the launch of the much talked-about i-mode
service in Germany through its E-Plus subsidiary. The European
launch is the result of a co-operation between KPN Mobile,
NTTDoCoMo, content providers and mobile handset manufacturer, NEC,
the Dutch operator said.
E-Plus will begin selling NEC’s n21i i-mode handset, designed
specifically for the European market to operate on a GPRS network.
With the i-mode device in hand, customers can access e-mail, news
reports, weather forecasts, transport information, sports reports,
leisure and gaming.
KPN Mobile is working with over 100 content providers, including
Royal Dutch Automobile Association, the daily newspaper De Telegraaf,
VI Planet Voetbal (soccer news), Belbios (cinema), Spiegel online
(new magazine), to offer European mobile users a taste of what
Japanese users have come to expect from DoCoMo’s i-mode.
The service will be launched in The Netherlands next month and in
Belgium come June.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Those
who have been watching the evolution of i-Mode are not surprised at
this. We think with minor tinkering, i-Mode will do well in
Europe. We give credit to the land of the Sun.
