Corporate IT Industry to Increase
Spending on Wireless Apps, survey finds
Corporate IT departments
worldwide will spend an average of $680,000 in 2002 on wireless
applications, up from $360,000 a year earlier, according to a survey
by the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA)
and the Wireless IT Research Group (WIRG).
The survey, ‘Global Wireless IT Benchmark Report — 2002,’
based on 336 companies worldwide, says that 51 percent of the firms
will increase their wireless budgets, while 41 percent will keep
their budgets at 2001 levels, and 8 percent will decrease their
spending.
"This groundbreaking research shows a tremendous desire to
implement wireless solutions at the enterprise level," said
WITSA president Harris N. Miller.
Further Findings
- Wireless e-mail is the most commonly used wireless application,
currently in use by 36 percent of all companies, with an
additional 49 percent of all respondents planning to implement it
in the future.
- Wireless Internet/intranet access is currently in use or will be
in use by 81 percent of all firms.
- Security is the most important issue for companies looking to
implement wireless solutions.
- More than half of the firms say they require 112 kbps or higher
for their wireless applications.
- Four in five IT companies say they are not committed to any one
wireless operating system.
"Our research shows that providers with strong security
measures, extensive coverage areas and data speed will attract
customers seeking to invest in wireless systems to improve their
communications," Mr. Miller said.
