3G Network Launched in Australia
Adelaide, Australia, has
become the first city in the southern hemisphere to have a 3G
network, reported NewsCom Australia.
The 3G network, known as M.Net, will enable subscribers to send
and receive video images and access the Internet from mobile phones.
The network will be used to test new services and applications
before being commercially released.
The network was established by a consortium of telecommunications
companies and research organizations for the World Congress on IT to
showcase the advances in wireless technology. Telstra built the
network using equipment provided by Alcatel.
The M.Net was built so that developers could try out new ideas,
concepts and technologies, explained Rick Wakeham, Telstra’s
mobile products managing director.
"We have to find out what is actually going to work for
people and that is what M.Net is about," he said. "Telstra
is not in the business of applications but we want to encourage
those who are."
Telstra has no plans to roll out 3G networks across Australia
until it has applications to make them fiscally viable.
