UbiNetics Launches Multi-mode Protocol Software To Ensure Problem-free GSM/GPRS to 3G Transition

The software builds on UbiNetics' established single mode UMTS protocol software, by adding GSM and GPRS functionality. As initial 3G coverage will be limited, the solution enables users to use services on GSM/GPRS networks, as well as high-speed 3G networks.

It also handles the complex hand-over between 2G/2.5G and 3G networks, so the user experience is not adversely affected. For example, if the quality of the signal significantly deteriorates when making a call on a UMTS cell, the software automatically falls back to GPRS/GSM cells to ensure that the communications continue.

Using its test product range, UbiNetics can prove its protocol software at an early stage. This ensures interoperability, which decreases risk and speeds up the roll-out of 3G services.

UbiNetics is currently working with all major 3GPP infrastructure developers to ensure the protocol software is compatible with their network equipment. The company supplies multi-mode protocol software pre-integrated and from a single source. UbiNetics' multi-mode solution was developed from the outset to support 2/2.5/3G, while competitors may have to significantly restructure their legacy GSM/GPRS solution to support UMTS.

"UbiNetics aims to take the pain out of the transition to 3G for handset and semiconductor manufacturers. Our protocol software is fast gaining momentum with new licensees in Taiwan and the US, which adds to our Korean and Japanese customer base," said Bob Thomas, vice president of business development, Americas, at UbiNetics. "The pre-integrated technology and proven interoperability gives our customers a fast-track to 3G multi-mode products."

In order to ensure that UbiNetics' licensees have access to a variety of hardware platforms, UbiNetics plans to port the protocol software to a number of different chipset platforms.

About UbiNetics
UbiNetics is a next generation wireless communications technology company. It designs and develops innovative 3G, 2.5G and 2G products and solutions for wireless data and voice applications and is a leader in 3G test and measurement equipment.

The company's 3G Test Mobile has become the industry de-facto standard for W-CDMA infrastructure testing. This, together with the CS100 Node B Emulator and portable TM200 Test Mobile, position UbiNetics at the center of 3G interoperability testing.

UbiNetics also provides the industry's most robust protocol software and physical layer IP portfolio for 3G chipset and handset developers and manufacturers.

The company has developed a unique range of creative products for UMTS and GPRS/GMS applications including customized embedded modules and development tools.

The company was formed in January 1999 from PA Consulting Group's Wireless Telecommunications Practice.

Since 1999, UbiNetics has grown to over 300 employees with seven international offices in the UK (Cambridge, Global Headquarters, and Swindon), Hong Kong, Japan, India and the US.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Now that 2.5G GSM/GPRS is a reality in most GSM countries as a transitional strategy., we do need more migration software to take us to 3G. Therefore we welcome UbiNetics software.
