Disney, Verizon to Offer Content
for BREW-Powered Devices
The Internet and wireless
division of the Walt Disney Co., Disney Interactive, has signed an
agreement with Verizon Wireless to develop news and entertainment
for Qualcomm’s new wireless platform, BREW.
Disney Interactive said it will create ESPN-branded sports
services for BREW-enabled phones. At present, Disney supplies
content free of charge from ESPN.com and ABCNews.com to Verizon
Wireless subscribers. But the development of BREW applications will
enable Disney to offer fee-based applications, including those under
development: ESPN’s ‘2-minute Drill,’ based on the sport TV
quiz show of the same name, and ESPN X Games Skateboarding and ESPN
X Games Snowboarding.
Disney already supplies Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless Services
with fee-based content. But this is its first BREW content,
according to spokesperson Kim Kerscher. She told Reuters, "This
is our first BREW content and that’s part of our strategy — that
we want to develop for all the key technology platforms and work
with all the major carriers."

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Time-sensitive
news like sports will find a few fans as subscribers who will probably
dump a few quarters to catch the latest score while they are mobile. Is
it more fun than the free radio broadcast? Is it more
user-friendly than the radio? We are not sure. We know that it will be
more expensive.
