Summus and Iteris to Develop
Wireless Mapping and Traffic Solutions
Summus, Inc. and Iteris,
Inc. have joined forces to develop and distribute wireless mapping
and real-time traffic solutions for digital handsets based on the
BREW and J2ME platforms.
The companies expect to bring a suite of applications to market
later this year.
Based on Summus’ BlueFuel Map module and real-time traffic and
mapping content from Iteris, the solution will enable users to
access, view and interact with real-time traffic maps for major U.S.
centers such as San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta,
Seattle, and Chicago.
The BlueFuel Map module allows users to view a color or
monochrome display of street-level and highway level maps, which can
be panned or zoomed for added convenience. The click-through
function enables users to easily find specific locations, landmarks,
or points-of-interest.
The maps will provide users real-time information on traffic
congestion on major highways and roadways as well as information on
accidents, road hazards, speeds and travel times.
Personalized traffic services will also be offered, the companies
said. Users will be able to see what their travel times will be for
specific travel routes, for example, from home to the office or from
the office to the airport.
"The combination of our real-time traffic data and Summus’
BlueFuel solution platform will create a powerful solution for
mobile consumers and professionals by delivering real-time traffic
maps and travel times to their cell phones," said Ed Rowe,
senior vice president of Iteris.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: This
is a very useful application that consumers will subscribe to.
Regional and local cellular providers should note. Small developers
should start creating mapping information content for large
metropolitan cities where this is of significant value to commuters.
