DoCoMo Launches Pilot Wireless LAN
Service
NTTDoCoMo said it will enter
the wireless LAN service market, which will, obviously, set the
stage for others to follow.
Japan’s largest wireless telecom will launch a wireless LAN
trial service, based on the IEEE 802.11b standard and integrated with
its 3G service, FOMA, running from April 15th to June 30th.
The company said subscribers can expect transmission speeds of up to
11 Mbps as well as the convenience of "hotspot" services
at some of the leading Japanese hotels, including the Imperial
Hotel, the Hotel Okura Tokyo, and the Tokyo International Forum.
The telecom has already begun recruiting over 1,000 tech savvy
Japanese users to monitor the service.
One of the objectives of the trial is to explore the possibility
of integrating its 3G mobile-phone service with wireless LAN
services, the company said.

DoCoMo is leading the way in testing the feasibility of hybrid networks.
Interesting part of this experiment is that it involves seamless
integration 3G and WiFi networks. DoCoMo test bed is also superior
because of many advanced 3G applications. Watch this one experiment,
please! We believe in the theory of hybrid networks but we are alive to
the problems as well especially when you are just stating off.
