MARKET OUTLOOK & TRENDS

IM Overtakes E-Mail as the Leading Wireless Application

Wireless messaging overtakes e-mail as the leading enterprise application and HTTPS is the security standard of choice for wireless developers, according to a survey conducted by research firm Evans Data Corp.

The results of the ‘Wireless Developer Survey,’ a bi-annual survey, showed that over 50 percent of the 600 programmers polled said messaging is overtaking e-mail as the most popular wireless application being developed for the corporate community.

According to Evans, organizations are integrating IM technology into internal applications so employees can collaborate on projects and communicate quickly over the Internet.

Overview of Findings
Instant Messaging technology

  • About 32 percent of developers are building commercial applications that incorporate instant messaging technology, for use by consumers and businesses alike.
  • Internal applications with IM capabilities are being built by 23 percent of developers.
  • About 10 percent are creating IM applications for individuals or small workgroups within corporations.

Wireless Standards

  • Wi-Fi, or 802.11b, is being used by one in four developers, compared to one in five six months earlier.
  • About 14 percent of participants said they are working with Bluetooth, and about 8 percent have chosen to work with HomeRF.
  • HTTPS is the most widely used security standard, with 39 percent saying they prefer the standard to all others.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: We want to warn readers of the results from Evan's study. The conclusions do not stand validation by what we see around us. We are also surprised by Evans asking developers about trends. Programmers do what they are asked to do by business development folks. It will be fair to say that most of the e-mail software development is done and now it is time to start developing IM applications. Let us not stretch this to conclude that IM has bypassed e-mail.
