IBM Puts WebSphere on the BREW
Platform
IBM has signed a deal with
Qualcomm to integrate its WebSphere Web services with Qualcomm’s
BREW platform, making its middleware available to a variety of
wireless devices worldwide. In addition, the company said WebSphere
Studio Device Developer, which creates, tests and deploys e-business
applications, would include a BREW plug-in.
Now WebSphere Micro Environment will enable business users
equipped with BREW-enabled phones using Java technology to perform a
host of e-business and consumer applications.
The Armonk, N.Y.-based company said the integrated solution will
allow wireless carriers to offer subscribers new services based on
WebSphere’s open standards and the BREW platform, without the
cumbersome customer inputs previously required.
For example, a technician using a BREW-enabled device can view
full-motion video on their handset, instructing them on how to
remove a part from a photocopier. Then, any replacement part could
be ordered and confirmed.
"By using the BREW open-standards to combine the portability
of Java with the power of WebSphere, developers can help enterprises
extend e-business applications to wireless devices while keeping the
technology inexpensive, secure and flexible," said Jonathan
Prial, vice president of marketing, Pervasive Computing, IBM.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: IBM's
WebSphere is among the leading application servers. BREW is an
important device platform for smart phones. Therefore it makes sense
for both IBM and QualComm to do this.
