IBM’s WebSphere Everyplace Access Makes Wireless Easy

Building on its pervasive computing initiative, International Business Machines has introduced WebSphere Everyplace Access (WEA), which allows remote workers to access e-mail to e-business applications using virtually any device on any network.

WEA is designed to deploy applications to multiple wireless devices, including PDAs, mobile phones, and other appliances, running on any network, from CDMA-based digital cellular networks to 802.11-based wireless LANs, from a single platform.

The software leverages the rest of the WebSphere suite, including WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Portal, DB2, Lotus and Tivoli. It also provides the core services necessary to build, deploy, manage and extend existing e-business applications to mobile devices. WEA is compatible with key industry standards, including SynchML, WAP and LDAP.

The first release, available during the second quarter, offers a core set of capabilities including synchronization technologies that address a wide range of connectivity modes, including disconnected, always-on, and intermittently connected devices. With a single IT infrastructure, enterprises can provide remote workers with tethered and untethered access to e-mail, personal information management applications, customer relationship management, sales force automation, and supply chain applications.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: IBM's WebSphere platform has become a strategic platform for e-commerce and m-commerce. While we support the sophistication of WebSphere for large enterprises, we would urge IBM to reduce the complexity of WebSphere and create a "plug and play" version for SMEs with configured horizontal and vertical applications .
